People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.

The short intermezzo between the Great War and World War II and especially the “roaring twenties” with their a thrill of speed were a period of radical social change and artistic development, and of vibrant metropolitan life and. Born into a merchant family in the Swiss mountain canton of Glarus, Lill Tschudi (1911–2004) moved to London in 1929 to educate herself at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. She flourished in the imperial capital and soon gained wide recognition for her bold and often colourful modernist linocuts. In the Anglo-Saxon world her reputation as an accomplished printmaker has lasted and her works continue to fetch good prices at auctions in Britain and Australia. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art holds some 120 of her prints in its permanent collection, while she has until to date never been distinguished with a solo exhibition in a public museum in her native Switzerland. This book, published to coincide with the first such display at Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich, features some 50 of her unique linocuts. Designed as a proper picture book, it shows her refined and expressive compositions with their captivating narrative in full-page plates, which are supplemented by informative essays. This publication impressively summarises the underlying research on the theme of energy by the Chair of Gion A. Caminada. Structured into 12 sections, it investigates the fundamentals of shaping space: form, geometry, material and construction – based on prominent examples in architectural history and a number of buildings by Caminada. Countless phenomena and rules of structural physics are also described in simple, clear terms.

This third and final volume in the Indicia book series presents the results of the Future Cities Laboratory research program in the form of "actions" for sustainable city-making. It complements the first and second volumes of the series that respec- tively documented the research challenges and approaches that prefigured these results. Read together, the three volumes chart the full arc and many productive eddies of the five-year programme and its mission to shape sustainable future cities. Research results are presented as condensed actions that take the form of general principles, recommendations, practical guidelines, and rules of thumb. The actions are neither technical standards nor prescriptive check-lists but invitations to explore, test and refine research insights within the context in which the reader lives, works and acts. The credibility, salience and legitimacy of each action is underpinned by scientific publications (journal articles, books and exhibitions) presented in extensive footnotes and suggestions for further reading.

The Yearbook presents student work from the courses of architectural design, technology, and visual design in the Department of Architecture at the ETH Zurich. The work was produced in the semester studios of 2011/2012, as part of a Master Thesis project, or within a Master of Advanced Studies programme (MAS). The Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), the Institute for Historic Building Research and Conservation (IDB), as well as the Network City and Landscape (NSL) with its Institute for Urban Design (ISB), the ETH Studio Basel/Contemporary City Institute, and the Institute for Landscape Architecture (ILA) present selected projects from their teaching and research activities. The ETH CASE, the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL), and the Werner Oechslin Library Foundation add to the spectrum of research platforms. The Yearbook thus presents the entire breadth of approaches and disciplines that characterize this school.
